Fung-Ctional was built in Northern Ontario with a simple belief: nature should never be treated as an unlimited resource.

Our products begin with a wild forest ingredient, so sustainability cannot be an afterthought or a separate marketing campaign. It must influence how we source, formulate, produce and grow.

We are not claiming perfection. We are building a more thoughtful system—one decision, one product and one improvement at a time.

Our Four Areas of Impact

1. Responsible Forest Sourcing

Our chaga is sourced through relationships with experienced Northern Ontario foragers who follow our selective harvesting standards.

Our approach is simple and memorable:

Map three. Harvest one. Leave at least 30%.

This standard is designed to discourage indiscriminate collection and keep respect for the forest at the centre of our supply chain.

2. Extending the Life of Our Ingredients

Chaga first enters our process as an ingredient for our beverages.

After steeping, selected material is redirected into our skincare process instead of automatically being treated as waste. It is then prepared for use in our collection of face mists and hand and body creams.

Upcycling does not make production waste-free, but it helps us use more of an ingredient we worked carefully to source.

3. Seeds and Trees with Every Milestone

Our impact commitment connects product sales with planting:

One item sold contributes one seed. Every 100th item contributes one tree.

Through our planting partnership with TELUS, we have supported reforestation work connected to wildfire-affected landscapes in Northern Saskatchewan.

During the first year of the partnership, customer purchases helped fund 28 trees.

As our sales grow, so does the opportunity to contribute more.

4. Supporting Rural Opportunity

Our forager relationships help create flexible earning opportunities within rural and northern communities.

The people who know these forests bring experience that cannot be replaced by anonymous sourcing. By building direct relationships, we aim to support local knowledge while creating a more transparent chaga supply chain.

Upcycling, Not Overclaiming

Sustainability language can become vague very quickly.

For us, upcycling has a specific meaning: selected chaga that has completed its role in our beverage-steeping process is prepared for a second use within our skincare collection.

It does not mean every production input is reusable. It does not mean we produce no waste. It means we are actively looking for responsible ways to get more value from carefully sourced materials.

We would rather communicate a real, measurable step than make a larger promise we cannot substantiate.
