Upcycled by Design
UPCYCLED BY DESIGN
One Ingredient. More Than One Purpose.
Most production processes are built around a straight line: source an ingredient, use it once and discard what remains.
We saw another possibility.
At Fung-Ctional, chaga first enters our process as a carefully sourced ingredient for our beverages. After steeping, selected material is redirected into our skincare process, where it is prepared for a considered second use.
The result is our collection of upcycled chaga face mists and hand and body creams—created to make more thoughtful use of an ingredient that began in Northern Ontario’s forests.
What Does Upcycled Skincare Mean?
Upcycling means transforming a material from one process into something useful for another purpose.
For Fung-Ctional, it means selected chaga from our beverage-making process is not automatically treated as waste. Instead, it is redirected and prepared as a chaga-derived ingredient for use in our topical formulations.
Upcycled does not mean previously used by a customer. The material comes directly from our own controlled production process and has never been in consumer contact.
From Beverage to Skincare
1. Responsibly Source
Our process begins with forest-sourced chaga collected through our Northern Ontario forager network.
2. Carefully Steep
The chaga is prepared and steeped as part of our beverage-production process.
3. Select and Redirect
Suitable material is separated from the primary process rather than automatically being discarded.
4. Prepare for Topical Use
The selected chaga is processed into a form appropriate for inclusion in our skincare formulations.
5. Thoughtfully Formulate
Depending on the product, our chaga-derived ingredient is paired with carefully selected ingredients such as botanical waters, aloe, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and emollient oils.
Our current collection includes botanical face mists and hand and body creams designed for everyday hydration and sensorial care.
Why Upcycle Chaga?
Chaga is a wild forest ingredient that requires knowledge and care to source.
Once it reaches our production space, we believe we have a responsibility to consider how much value can be created from it before it leaves our process.
Upcycling helps us:
- Extend the useful life of selected chaga
- Reduce avoidable production waste
- Connect our beverage and skincare collections
- Create more value from a carefully sourced ingredient
- Design sustainability into the product journey
It is not a claim of perfection. It is a practical decision to use more and waste less.
Premium Skincare with a Clearer Purpose
Sustainable products should still be beautiful to use.
Our skincare collection is designed to feel refined, uncomplicated and at home within an everyday routine. Botanical aromas, lightweight face mists and hydrating creams bring a sensorial element to formulas created with purpose.
We do not believe customers should have to choose between thoughtful production and a premium experience.

Created from Experience
Our skincare collection is informed by co-founder Chelsea’s background in the aesthetics and spa industry.
That experience shaped the collection’s focus on texture, hydration, botanical ingredients and the small rituals that make everyday skincare feel considered.
The formulas connect professional inspiration with the resourcefulness at the heart of Fung-Ctional: look closely at what you already have, and find a better way to use it.
Not Zero-Waste—A Meaningful Second Step
Upcycling selected chaga does not make our entire company or production process waste-free.
It does represent a measurable improvement over a single-use model. As we grow, we will continue reviewing which materials can be safely and responsibly redirected, reduced or avoided.
Transparency matters more to us than perfection language.
A Connected Product Story
Our sparkling chaga and skincare collections are not separate sustainability stories.
They are part of one connected process:
Forest-sourced chaga. Thoughtfully steeped. Carefully redirected. Refined for a second purpose.
